Visit the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council (CTHRC) website for information about the various types of jobs and positions that can be found within the trucking industry. Q. I would like to work in the trucking industry, but I don’t want to be a driver. What other jobs are there?
There are many different types of jobs in the trucking industry. Mechanics, trailer-technicians, bookkeepers, human resource staff, marketers, front desk staff, warehouse/dock workers, wash bay attendants, dispatch and customer service staff… the list is endless. If you are interested in researching a position (other than driving) in the industry, please visit the website of the Canadian Trucking Human Resource Council at http://www.truckingcareers.ca.
Q. I already have my Class 1 license but I don’t have any driving experience so no one will hire me. How can I get a job in the trucking industry?
Getting a job as a truck driver can be very difficult without at least one to two years of driving experience. Even though you have the qualifications required to haul one of the big tractors down the highway, it doesn’t mean that a carrier is going to be willing to let you do that without meaningful experience! However, there are ways to gain experience in the industry. Try contacting local construction companies or gravel haulers to find out if they are hiring. You may have to get your feet wet by driving smaller trucks before you move onto 53” trailers. Moving companies may be another option for you to consider. Remember, just like almost all other industries, people have to “put in their time” before getting the position they are truly seeking.
