Q. I would like to get into truck driving, but I keep hearing about needing my FAST card. What is the FAST program?
The FAST (Free and Secure Trade) program is a commercial clearance program designed to ensure safety and security while expediting legitimate trade across the Canada-U.S. border. Everyone involved in the FAS program – drivers, carriers, and importers – must undergo a risk assessment. Only low-risk applicants can participate in the FAST program; this allows the Canadian Border Services Agency to focus resources and security efforts on those who are high or unknown risk.
What do I have to do to obtain my FAST card?
To get a FAST card, drivers must:
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada or the United States
- Currently reside in Canada or the United States
- Be at least 18 years old
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Be admissible to Canada or the United States under applicable immigration laws
Your application must be approved by both Canada and the United States. If you do not meet the above requirements, your application will be denied.
Q. My FAST application was denied. Why would that happen?
FAST applications can be denied for a number of reasons, including (but not limited to):
- You provide false or incomplete information on your application;
- You have been convicted of a criminal offence in any country for which you have not received a pardon;
- You have been found in violation of customs or immigration law; or
- You fail to meet requirements of the FAST Commercial Driver Program.
Q. How do I apply to the FAST program?
Applicants can apply either on-line or with a paper application. Please visit http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/fast-expres/paper-papier-eng.html for details on the paper application process (including fees and required documentation) or http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/fast-expres/exit-sortir-eng.html for the on-line application process.

By participating in this first worldwide supply chain security initiative, companies will ensure a more secure and expeditious supply chain for their employees, suppliers and customers.
